Best Restaurant Options

Sometimes eating processed foods just can't be avoided. None of us are going to become hermits so we can sit at home and eat healthy, fresh prepared meals. Again, the key is All In Moderation. When you do go out to eat, try to make conscious decisions about your meal choices. And remember that splurging every once in awhile will not kill you - eating unhealthy all the time could.

  • McDonald's - Best options at McDonald's are the obvious. Skip the burger and french fried and order a Premium Grilled Chicken Sandwich (with no mayonnaise) and a Fruit 'N Yogurt Parfait (sparkpeople.com). This combination is only 530 calories vs. 1170 calories for a Big Mac with fries (associatedcontent.com).
  • Wendy's - Best option at Wendy's is the Mandarin Chicken Salad with a small side of Chili for 760 calories (sparkpeople.com)  vs. the Baconator value meal with 1460 calories (wendy's.com).
  • Subway - The sandwiches at Subway can get tricky. Most people think that by having a sandiwch, they are much better off than ordering from the drive through. A 6" Cold Cut Combo on Honey Wheat with cheese and 1 tbsp of mayonnaise is 780 calories (subway.com). Best option here is a 6" Oven Roasted Chicken Breast sandwich on 9 grain whole wheat.
  • Chick-Fil-A - This is one of my favorite fast food places. Your best option here is a Chargrilled Chicken Sandwich for 270 calories (sparkpeople.com). Just stay away from the waffle fries (or splurge! They are yummy!), Again, all in moderation. A small serving of waffle fries every once in awhile is perfectly fine.
Basically, use common sense, and ask for nutrition information. If you are at a restaurant, don't be afraid to ask for vegetables without butter, or a burger without a bun. And don't be afraid to send it back if it isn't right. When getting a salad, get the dressing on the side and dip your fork in it before each bite instead of pouring it over the salad. Another great option for restaurants is to eat half of the meal, and save the other half for lunch the next day.
